Tarleton State University – VDI, One size doesn’t fit all

Tarleton State University were looking at the best way to virtualize the university desktop. Further investigation revealed that getting Windows apps to students was the main requirement.

Was an expensive VDI solution still the best choice?

Background to Virtualization at Tarleton State University

Tarleton State University is a vibrant learning community with nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as a doctorate in education, within five colleges—agricultural and environmental sciences, business administration, education, liberal and fine arts, and science and technology. Tarleton State University offer over 12,000 students the value of a Texas A&M University System degree with its own brand of personal attention.

VDI or Application Virtualization?

Tarleton State University faced a familiar problem. How to provide a range of software applications to the student desktop in the most efficient and user friendly way. Early market research suggested that a traditional VDI solution may be the best fit, but further investigation suggested this option could be an expensive way to deliver Windows applications to students, staff and devices.

Application Virtualization was the next obvious solution, but the majority of solutions were not able to virtualize 100% of applications. Moreover, many were not able to virtualize the tricky apps that are used in the university.

Step in Application Jukebox, from Software2. Now Tarleton State University are able to:

  • Provide any Windows application to students to desktops across campus.
  • Deliver an awesome student experience.
  • Reduce the time to teach.
  • Package applications quickly and easily as well as release patches and updates without downtime.
  • … and all at a fraction of the cost of the original VDI solution
